Values are principles and standards of behavior that govern the society; however, a trend is developing where decadence in values is being excused for fame especially for Society influencers like artists and people that are held in high esteem.
Today, personalities, especially those in media (both mainstream and social) have become the custodians of values and whatever they do or say goes. It is, therefore, vital that they use their influence with utmost sensitivity to what they portray so that the moral fabric is protected. It saddens that these platforms especially social media are being used to spread the message that nakedness, alcoholism, drug abuse, materiality, and fashion (normally called Luku) are what determine whether or not one is acceptable in the eyes of society.
Starting from TV shows to Vulgar music, it is quite clear that the entertainment trends have changed but this should not mean that a misdirection from the core values is acceptable. Just because it is being done doesn’t make it right. The older generation in their thirties and forties should now be at the forefront in developing mentorship hubs to give direction to teenagers and the younger generation.
It’s time we went back to the basics, what makes us unique as a people. The ethics, values, standards, principles, and the essence for which we are different from any other society in Africa and Globally. We cannot afford to deviate from our core, from consciousness, that which drives our decisions and makes us see the bigger picture
When did obscenity become cool?
When did clean content become wrong?
What happened to raise a generation that will portray who we are?
What happened to good parenting?
What happened to train up a child the way they should be when they are younger?
The new type of music is more of a cry of a generation and imagery of what life means in this day and age. The rise in socialites should give us an awakening as to the level to which young women have accepted that their body is worth nothing but just an Income generating tool.
In the beginning, this was never the intention, women are beings of awe to be loved, respected, and created for a supreme and divine purpose. They are the givers and Incubators of life. They have never been sexual objects, that is just a misconception.
We are looking towards a revolution politically for our country but how about we start with a self -revolution, how about we go back to the basics as a society, one young person at a time. That young woman/girl, that young man you see in the community that you think has lost the way start there, talk to them, listen to them, they need someone to talk to, they need that embrace. Some have lost the way because we have failed in parenting and they only see their parents on the weekends and at that time they are busy preparing to go out for Dunda. They don’t know about parental love, direction, or guidance, they only know parental provision through payment of school fees and access to basic needs.
This is the cry of a generation, the Decadence in morality will kill more than the world wars, it’s time to step up, speak out and reset, it is time to bring back our society to where we need to be and look at the bigger picture of building generations from a firm foundation of values.
