A star in the rising by his standards, he needs no introduction. Waihiga Mwaura is a household name with a strong on-screen presence.
A distinguished journalist with a career spanning over ten years, he has risen to the ranks in this cut-throat media industry. His most notable achievement is when he became the recipient of the prestigious BBC Kumla Dola Award in 2018.
Waihiga has hosted Citizen Tv News Night, a role he took up after his predecessor Hussein Mohammed exited the station. As an incredibly result-Oriented journalist, he handled this position and surpassed expectations.
Waihiga put Kenya on the map when he won the much-coveted CNN Africa journalist of the year award in the sports category. This win came while he had worked for a few years at Citizen TV.
Waihiga joined citizen Tv as a host of the Zinduka show which aired for two seasons. It was an entrepreneurship show airing on Wednesdays, during prime time news.
A vacancy presented itself within the organization that saw him join the Power Breakfast Show team, he worked for two years before the show run its course.
As his quest for growth increased he joined the sports desk fully as an anchor and producer, he enrolled in learning programs and talked to seasoned journalists. He adds that his lack of formal media training propelled him to yearn for more.
Waihiga was a three-time nominee for the Annual Journalism Excellence Awards(AJEA). In 2012 he won the CNN MultiChoice Africa Award, for his story on Maasai Cricket Warriors. The feature was how Maasai Morans used cricket to fight Female Genital Mutilation.

In 2015 he won the inaugural Mo Amin Award for a story on doping in athletics that was recognized by World Anti- Doping Agency, who warned Kenya authorities against laxity in taking action against the vice.
His Current Position as Special Projects Editor at Citizen Tv will have him take charge of features/investigative stories/special reports as well as strategic planning for all special events at the station. The position fell vacant after the resignation of Asha Mwilu who went to launch her own media company.
Waihiga is married to Joyce Omondi who is also hosting a TV show at Switch Tv. Joyce credits her husband’s promotion largely to salvation and God-honoring Waihiga. The couple has managed to keep their private life away from social media.
The couple both serve in ministry and this has enabled them to remain grounded. Waihiga credits his wife Joyce for his success, as they challenge each other for professional & personal growth.
Waihiga describes himself as helpful and wants to inspire young people to tell African stories uniquely. He says for one to remain relevant in this industry it takes discipline and integrity.
He thanks his parents as his first mentors who gave him a good Christian foundation that has helped guide him on his path to success.
The sky is the limit for Waihiga and a big congratulations on his new role.
